After the rather macabre safari, today’s safari was a refreshing experience. Not too far from where the stillborn calf was found, another family with a newborn was enjoying the afternoon sun.

Two other females were feeding on the tender reeds, growing in the shallow water near the river bank.

The large tusker in musth was busy on the Bandipur side. A few females loitered close by and he followed them into the forest. I saw one female lingering away from the rest and he quickly caught up with her. Only in two years will we know if this flirtation will lead to the birth of another.

Another tusker was nicely framed by the bamboo shoots near Sunset Point.

Life goes on and new births will replace those that were lost. It has always been like this and will hopefully continue to be so, till extinction catches up with us.
