Indian wildlife
India is home to a large variety of flora and fauna. India has an amazingly wide variety of wildlife, animals and birds that live in the diverse terrain of the country. From the Royal Bengal tigers to Asiatic Elephants, India houses this huge variety of animals in its 89 national parks, 18 Bio-Reserves and more than 400 wildlife sanctuaries.
Biodiversity
The Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas and Indo-Burma region are the three of the 34 most biodiversity rich spots in the world. According to a study, India is one of the 17 countries that host about 60 to 70 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. Due to this, national parks and wildlife reserves have come up in different parts of the country where a healthy interaction of humans and wildlife is encouraged. India, today, has as many as 15 biosphere reserves for the conservation of endemic and endangered species, out of which four are part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
If you were a convoy of industrious insects going about your lawful business in the leafy channels of Coorg, you’d do well to keep a lookout. For, flying the Jolly Roger in these parts, are roving bands of the Oriental White-eye, avian pirates that descend on the unwary and decamp with their lives. In the […]

‘The Indian Peafowl, or Blue Peafowl, is a large and brightly coloured bird of the pheasant family…’ Now, if that sounded like the most boringly plebeian introduction, blame Mr. Peacock. Understatement is so alien to anything connected with the male of the species, that even facts have to find their inner muse and dress up […]

Imagine you’re out on a leisurely walk in Coorg and suddenly you hear the melodious strain of a flute wafting out of the woods. You wonder if it is some local minstrel, wandering, like a wood sprite, in the trees, or a modern day Krishna invisibly serenading his Gopikas… or if there is some precocious […]

This is a tale about visual design in the natural world, and masterpieces created using proprietary Adobe technology. If you’re wide-eyed already, just hold your horses. This ‘Dreamweaver’ isn’t the popular web development tool, but a tech-savvy bird in Coorg, that goes by the name of Baya. The Baya Weaver is a master craftsman who […]

Our songs have always immortalised the ‘Lady in Red’, but in the animal kingdom, it’s the Lad in Red who never goes to an empty bed. Nowhere is it more true than in the hills and dales of Coorg, where a little male bird has captured a disproportionate share of female attention. It’s said that […]

We’ve all grown up on stories of the Mafia and how most businessmen need to shell out ‘Protection Money’ to carry on with their lives and businesses. In a Kabini, teeming with predatory gangs, there is one set of precocious toddlers who begin this practise early. The Red Pierrot of Kabini is a case in […]

When you see someone dressed in a flamboyant waistcoat of crimson-pink, wearing brilliant blue eyeliner to match with the blue lipstick on their bill, you know there’s a party somewhere in the jungle, and this is a gregarious regular on the Page 3 circuit. So you hop across to say “Hello”, and this handsome hunk […]

In a land where a lot of the natives trace their ancestry to the Macedonian armies of Alexander the Great, there exists one bashful prince whose very name bespeaks roots in an Emerald Isle much closer to home. The Sri Lankan Frogmouth, so called because of his wide, gaping mouth that resembles a frog’s, is […]

If you’re a feathered visitor to a swampy marsh, you’d do well to think twice before alighting on a conveniently placed branch in the middle of the water. The temptation – especially if its nesting season – to grab twigs and branches sticking out of the water, could lead you to being mugged, with fatal […]

When you think of flying sticks and tricks, you tend to think of Bruce Lee and his famous split-stick, the Nunchaku, or circus acts where clowns and magicians make simple sticks do their bidding. But have you ever known a stick that has a mind of its own, and can do things beyond the normal? […]
