Indian wildlife
India is home to a large variety of flora and fauna. India has an amazingly wide variety of wildlife, animals and birds that live in the diverse terrain of the country. From the Royal Bengal tigers to Asiatic Elephants, India houses this huge variety of animals in its 89 national parks, 18 Bio-Reserves and more than 400 wildlife sanctuaries.
Biodiversity
The Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas and Indo-Burma region are the three of the 34 most biodiversity rich spots in the world. According to a study, India is one of the 17 countries that host about 60 to 70 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. Due to this, national parks and wildlife reserves have come up in different parts of the country where a healthy interaction of humans and wildlife is encouraged. India, today, has as many as 15 biosphere reserves for the conservation of endemic and endangered species, out of which four are part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
For those of us brought up on a literary repast of captions adorning signboards and those quirky lines on the backs of trucks that own our highways, the title of this story will bring about a strong sense of déjà vu. As it will, for our naturalist cousins in Kaziranga, home to the great Indian […]

If some of our male readers had the chance to become someone else and live that person’s life, we wouldn’t be surprised if they chose to bypass obvious culprits like ‘the world’s richest man’, and instead chose an Arab sheikh or emir with a harem of wives at his beck and call. Now if we […]

At the outset, we’d like to apologise for not having the will power to resist using this particular caption for this week’s story. It was just so deliciously tempting that we couldn’t help but dive right in to come up with the most obvious pun in the world! But hey…since this fortnight’s piece is ‘about […]

If you’ve ever stopped to smell the flowers in Kabini, chances are that you’d have made the acquaintance of a very pretty female member of the jungle glitterati. Flying at canopy level, this temptress invites you to look up, and gives you flashes of her undergarments that look like they’re straight out of a designer’s […]

If you’re a Dunnock, Pipit or a Eurasian Reed Warbler, you could be excused for walking around with a slightly confused expression. We empathise with the Warbler mom who lovingly tends to her eggs, and watches proudly as they hatch only to have one of the hatchlings respond to her maternal entreaties with a ‘cuckoo’ […]

We’ve all heard of the legendary hospitality of Coorg, and how the denizens readily share their table and cellar with any chance visitor. So, it won’t come as a complete surprise if you’re accosted in the woods with a whistled invitation to ‘tea for two’ even if, normally, coffee is the cup that cheers in […]

How would you feel when you’ve spent a long time sussing out your prey, before successfully hunting it down, and flying home happily with the spoils, only to have doom strike down from the skies, cheating you of your hard-earned meal? You’d feel very much like the Black-shouldered Kite which lost out to a fellow […]

If we polled our fair women readers, chances are a high percentage will claim that men never grow up, and are metaphorically attached to their momma’s skirts. We men can take solace from the fact that we aren’t alone in this particular affliction. In Kabini, there exists a lad who’s the biggest baby of them […]

Since antiquity, owls and owlets have fascinated mankind, and different societies have invested in them an almost mythical veneer of wisdom or, depending on their cultural moorings, a darker, more malignant intelligence. While the veneration of the ‘wise owl’ has its provenance in western culture in the legend of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom […]

Tailors stitch clothes. Or that’s what we’ve always believed. In Coorg, however, they sew, rivet and stitch ready-to-occupy homes. There is an entire community of seamstresses in this neck of the woods, who give ‘tailor-made’ homes a whole new meaning, creating plush, bespoke dwellings that are a far cry from the assembly line apartments that […]
