Kabini
The Kabini, also called Kapila, is a river in southern India. It originates in the Wayanad District of Kerala state by the confluence of the Panamaram River and the Mananthavady River. It flows eastward to join the Kaveri River at Tirumakudalu Narasipura in Karnataka. The Kabini area of the Nagarhole National Park is one of the most popular wildlife destinations of Karnataka, probably because of its accessibility, lush green landscape surrounding a large lake, and sightings of herds of elephants and tigers.
It is 80 km (50 mi) away from Mysore and 205 km (127 mi) from Bengaluru, and comprises the south-eastern part of Nagarhole National Park. Situated on the banks of the Kabini River, the reserve is spread over 644 SQKM of forestland, steep valleys, and water bodies. Once a private hunting reserve of the Maharaja of Mysore, Kabini was a popular shikar hotspot for British Viceroys and Indian royalty. Now it is considered to be one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka, famous for its spectacular wildlife and bird life.
‘The Indian Peafowl, or Blue Peafowl, is a large and brightly coloured bird of the pheasant family…’ Now, if that sounded like the most boringly plebeian introduction, blame Mr. Peacock. Understatement is so alien to anything connected with the male of the species, that even facts have to find their inner muse and dress up […]

In a Kabini, teeming with predatory gangs, there is one set of precocious toddlers who begin this practise early. The Red Pierrot of Kabini is a case in […]

If you’re a feathered visitor to a swampy marsh, you’d do well to think twice before alighting on a conveniently placed branch in the middle of the water. The temptation – especially if its nesting season – to grab twigs and branches sticking out of the water, could lead you to being mugged, with fatal […]

Millennia before the advent of the Chicken 65, a dish worshipped in India and almost conferred the status of ‘national bird’, there lived a chicken that was venerated by Egyptian royalty. The Pharaoh’s Chicken was a rather peculiar bird, not least because it wasn’t even a hen to begin with. It was an Egyptian Vulture, […]

Now you see him; now you don’t! He may be barely a few weeks old, and look as cute as a button, but that’s only when you manage to spot him (please don’t tell us he was born ‘spotted’; we’ve only heard that one 13774 times). For, the young Fawn is a champion hide-n-seeker. Of […]

We have all grown up on a diet of stories about the animal kingdom, where each denizen is anointed with a descriptive tag that’s added a filter through which it has always been viewed. So, we have had the ‘greedy’ pig, the ‘cunning’ fox, the ‘majestic’ lion… all immortalized through the good offices of comicdom. […]

While visitors to the forests of Kabini are always advised to keep an eye out for a tiger lurking in the underbrush, not all tigers in the area are big cats slinking past on a predatory evening prowl. There are also tiny little ones who don’t just eschew the dark, but go out of their […]

Gone are the days of Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad and other knights in shining armour. When you think of armour today, the mind can’t go beyond those mainstays of modern armies: Main Battle Tanks! Think WW2, and you think of Panzers steam-rolling Europe; names like Sherman, Patton, Tiger and Centurion roll off the tongue with […]

For those of us brought up on a literary repast of captions adorning signboards and those quirky lines on the backs of trucks that own our highways, the title of this story will bring about a strong sense of déjà vu. As it will, for our naturalist cousins in Kaziranga, home to the great Indian […]
