Lifescapes
Lifescapes is a photo story on the nature of our destinations. It’s said that a good photograph takes an instant out of time, and alters life by holding it still. It’s also said that the best still images, are moving. They move you beyond time and space, move you emotionally, spiritually and intellectually; move you because they tell an entire story, in a single frame. This, then, has been the philosophy behind LIFESCAPES; to share with you, the lore of our land, in the form of a fortnightly photo-essay.
Every fortnight, we shall share with you a slice of life at our locations, told in a single, compelling picture with a short commentary. We, at Orange County, hope that you will enjoy this offering, and share that joy with your friends. This would help immeasurably in our Responsible Tourism Initiatives by kindling the spark of interest in the nature and culture of our land.
The Panchatantra and Jataka Tales that have entertained children over millennia, are replete with stories of foxes and their inherent cunning. While the big bad wolf was the alpha villain infesting our imaginations, it was the fox with her bushy tail that symbolised an insidious presence that could beguile us, and insinuate herself into our […]

When you think of flying sticks and tricks, you tend to think of Bruce Lee and his famous split-stick, the Nunchaku, or circus acts where clowns and magicians make simple sticks do their bidding. But have you ever known a stick that has a mind of its own, and can do things beyond the normal? […]

“A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma…” Churchill’s famous words may well have been said of the Checkered Keelback at the Oscars presentation ceremony, for this serpent is the ultimate thespian, playing multiple roles with effortless ease. Like the best ‘method actors’, Mr. Keelback must have studied his objects of inspiration intensely so […]

Millennia before the advent of the Chicken 65, a dish worshipped in India and almost conferred the status of ‘national bird’, there lived a chicken that was venerated by Egyptian royalty. The Pharaoh’s Chicken was a rather peculiar bird, not least because it wasn’t even a hen to begin with. It was an Egyptian Vulture, […]

Now you see him; now you don’t! He may be barely a few weeks old, and look as cute as a button, but that’s only when you manage to spot him (please don’t tell us he was born ‘spotted’; we’ve only heard that one 13774 times). For, the young Fawn is a champion hide-n-seeker. Of […]

For some it has always been a miracle; an act of faith. For others, it has merely been an act of science, albeit awe-inspiring. For centuries, this vision of someone actually treading water has become commonplace in Coorg, yet familiarity hasn’t bred contempt. Those who’ve watched it a thousand times will still stop and wonder […]

We have all grown up on a diet of stories about the animal kingdom, where each denizen is anointed with a descriptive tag that’s added a filter through which it has always been viewed. So, we have had the ‘greedy’ pig, the ‘cunning’ fox, the ‘majestic’ lion… all immortalized through the good offices of comicdom. […]

We’ve all known those perennially unsatisfied people who complain about everything, reminding us of the saying, ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’. In Coorg however, the saying takes on quite a literal perspective. Here, in the mystic hills, lives a bird that has given rise to many legends – the Greater Coucal, […]
