The Elephant Sage

One of the great joys of watching elephants in the wild in Kabini is seeing them in water. Once you have watched an elephant swim, bathe, and submerge itself with ease, it becomes hard to think of forests or trees as their true element. Water seems closer to it. In water, their massive bodies move without effort. There is space, buoyancy, and a sense of complete comfort. It almost feels as though elephants live in water and step onto land only to feed, returning whenever they can to the place where their strength feels most natural and unchallenged.
It was on a boat safari on a November afternoon, when the days were still warm, nights beginning to turn cold, that I came across this scene. The water would have been cold enough by then to push crocodiles out to the banks, and two of them lay stretched at the water’s edge, basking in the winter sun. Not far from them, an elephant stood grazing, calm and absorbed, close enough to the river to step in if it wished. None of them paid the others any attention. They were simply occupying the same margin of water, each entirely at home.
Unlike deer or other prey animals, elephants do not bring immediate tension into a crocodile’s presence. Their size alone changes the equation. And that was precisely what made the scene so striking: the absence of anything unfolding. No alertness. No calculation. Just a large animal feeding, and two ancient reptiles resting, each settled into its own rhythm.

And yet, my mind started to scream “Gajendra Moksha” like I had solved the crossword on a sleepy afternoon. How often does one see an elephant, crocodile and still water in the same scene? As excited as I was, I also noted that the picture in front of me carried none of the drama from the Puranic lore of the elephant devotee of Sri Hari. The episode from the Bhagavata Purana is built around a moment where an elephant’s enormous strength proves insufficient in the very element where it feels most secure. The crocodile’s grip turns familiarity into struggle, and the story pivots at the point where strength, not only proved insufficient, but in perpetuating the delusion of one’s own control, it delays submission and subsequently salvation.
What has always stayed with me about that story is not its outcome, but its choice of imagery. A crocodile taking down an elephant may be unlikely in the forest, but the image itself is not far-fetched. Elephants at water’s edge, crocodiles claiming the same boundary, these are sights that would have been witnessed again and again over thousands of years until they were imprinted in our collective memory, eventually taking the shape of a metaphor that spoke about limits, vulnerability, and the true elephantine strength of devotion.
What made this moment different was how quiet everything was. The story I remembered was full of struggle, charged with despair, a true jungle story of being hunted and fighting a battle of life and death. The scene in front of me had none of this. The crocodiles basked, uninterested in movement. The elephant here was not the dull-minded beast who was drowning in sensory pleasures. But one that sagely stood his ground, wise and self-aware. Nothing was being tested. Nothing was at stake. And that calm, oddly enough, was what made the connection linger. The forest offered the raw image from which stories are born, but stripped of urgency and conflict, leaving behind only a shared habitat and the pleasure of observing it as it was.
